querer, poder and preferir + infinitive

The rule

Three stem-changing verbs that carry most of what a learner needs to ask for: quiero (I want), puedo (I can, I may), prefiero (I prefer). All three change their stem when stressed — e→ie in querer and preferir, o→ue in poder — and all three are followed straight by an infinitive with no preposition: quiero cambiar, ¿puedo probarme esto?, prefiero pagar en efectivo.

Pattern

quiero / quieres / quiere · puedo / puedes / puede · prefiero / prefieres / prefiere + infinitivo

Examples

  1. Quiero devolver este jersey.

    I want to return this jumper.

  2. ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?

    May I pay by card?

  3. Prefiero sentarme dentro.

    I prefer to sit inside.

Keep in mind

  • Quiero comer. / Quiero a comer.

    No preposition after these three verbs.
