How long: hace … que and llevar
The rule
A1 taught desde hace: vivo aquí desde hace tres años. Conversation prefers two other ways to say it. Hace + time + que + present: hace tres años que vivo aquí. llevar + time + gerund: llevo tres años viviendo aquí — llevar is conjugated for the person. To ask: ¿cuánto tiempo hace que…? or ¿cuánto tiempo llevas…?. The verb is PRESENT, because the situation is still going on: English says "I have been living", Spanish says vivo. For "not for a long time", use sin: llevo una semana sin dormir bien.
hace + tiempo + que + presente · llevar + tiempo + gerundio · llevar + tiempo + sin + infinitivo
