ir / venir, llevar / traer
The rule
Spanish chooses the verb by where the SPEAKER is. venir and traer mean movement towards the place where I am: ven aquí, ¿me traes un vaso de agua?. ir and llevar mean movement away from it, towards somewhere else: voy a tu casa, te llevo al aeropuerto. English says "I'm coming to your house"; Spanish says voy a tu casa, because your house is not where I am. Likewise traer is "bring here" and llevar is "take there".
aquí, donde estoy yo: venir, traer · allí, a otro sitio: ir, llevar
