Spanish grammar

ser and estar: events, and adjectives that change

A2 · Elementary Verbs and time Questions 10

The rule

Two more things A1 did not cover. First, an EVENT — a party, a meeting, a concert, a class — takes ser for where and when it takes place: la reunión es en la sala tres, la fiesta es el sábado. estar is for where a person or a thing is: la sala está en el segundo piso. Second, a handful of adjectives mean something different with each verb: ser listo (clever) / estar listo (ready); ser malo (bad) / estar malo (ill); ser rico (rich) / estar rico (tasty); ser aburrido (boring) / estar aburrido (bored); and a shop está abierta (open now).

Pattern

evento: es en / es a las · lugar: está en · listo, malo, rico, aburrido

Examples

  1. La boda es en un pueblo cerca de Toledo.

The wedding is in a village near Toledo.

  2. Hoy no voy a clase, estoy malo.
