The rule

A bare imperative is not rude in Spanish, but it is direct, and there are softer frames every adult uses. Learn four as fixed expressions and you have covered most of what a counter, a clinic or an office needs: quería… ("I wanted…", the commonest of all), me gustaría…, ¿podría…?, ¿le importaría…?. Notice that quería is the imperfect being used for politeness, not for the past — that is why "Quería pedir cita" is not a story about yesterday.

Pattern

quería + infinitivo · me gustaría + infinitivo · ¿podría + infinitivo?

Examples

  1. Quería pedir cita con el médico.

    I would like to make an appointment with the doctor.

  2. ¿Podría repetirlo más despacio?

    Could you say that again more slowly?

  3. Me gustaría ver el piso esta semana.

    I would like to see the flat this week.

Keep in mind

  • Quiero / Quería

    Both mean "I want"; the second is the polite one at a counter.
