Spanish grammar

The imperative: tú and usted

A1 · Beginner Verbs and time Questions 10

The rule

Two forms are enough for this course. For tú, take the third person of the present and stop: habla, come, escribe, espera, pasa. Eight verbs are irregular and worth memorising as a block: di, haz, ve, pon, sal, sé, ten, ven. For usted, the ending swaps: -ar verbs take -e (espere, pase, rellene) and -er/-ir verbs take -a (coma, escriba, siga). Pronouns attach to the end: dígame, siéntese, espéreme — and the accent moves to keep the stress.

Pattern

tú: habla, come, escribe · usted: hable, coma, escriba · dígame, siéntese
